焼尻島の礎を築いた人　四戸梅太郎**

四戸梅太郎は、岩手県花巻に生まれました。
明治39年、増毛警察署を退官したのち、戸長として焼尻島へ渡ってきます。

島に着いた彼は、当時の暮らしぶりに心を痛めました。
人々の生活を少しでも良くしたい――
その思いから、さまざまな改革に取り組みはじめます。

漁業組合をつくり、婦人会や青年団を組織し、
島の人たちが力を合わせて暮らしていけるよう尽くしました。
やがて初代村長となった四戸は、
焼尻の未来を見据え、カラマツ三十万本もの植林計画を立てます。

その木々は、長い年月をかけて島に根を張り、
やがて豊かな森となりました。

四戸梅太郎が残した「森を育てる」という思いは、
今も島の人たちの心に静かに受け継がれています。

Umetarō Shinohe — A Man Who Helped Shape the Island**

Umetarō Shinohe was born in Hanamaki, Iwate Prefecture.
After retiring from the police force in Mashike in 1906,
he came to Yagishiri Island to serve as village head.

What he found on the island troubled him deeply.
Wanting to improve the lives of the people,
he began working on many reforms.

He organized a fisheries cooperative,
formed women’s and youth associations,
and devoted himself to building a stronger community.

Later, as the island’s first village mayor,
he looked far into Yagishiri’s future and began an ambitious plan
to plant 300,000 trees across the island.

Over the years, those trees took root and became the forests that now cover the island.

The spirit Shinohe left behind—the desire to nurture and protect the forest—
still lives quietly in the hearts of the people of Yagishiri today.
